Good News Stories, May 2016

Welcome spring, sunshine, and hope for new beginnings – for you, for your family, and for the world.
While it’s been wonderful to have our “Good News Stories” to cheer us through the bleak winter months, it’s joy on top of joy to share good news in the springtime.  Even in the dead of winter, however, we don’t drag our feet on the way to work at Hearing Aid Source because we know we’re going to help make wonderful things happen for wonderful people.  Here are the stories of just a couple of them…

Last month we told you about having met Krikor*, who had escaped Syria with his family.  This month we were pleased to meet another Syrian newcomer, Marie*.

At 83-years old, it’s hard to imagine the toll that escaping Syria must have taken on Marie.  In her last few months in Syria, she says, she didn’t know if the last sound she and her family would hear would be the sound of a missile overhead.  They once counted 22 missiles in as little as six hours.

Now, safe in Canada, Marie wonders how she’ll stay in touch with her family, who have scattered everywhere in search of a new, safe life.  Marie recalls, sadly, that it has been several years since she has been able to see or speak to her sister, who fled to Lebanon.

It has been such a treat to be able to help Marie by fitting her with hearing aids.  Her family jokes that they can’t get away with anything anymore, as she is able to hear when they talk in low voices behind her back.  In truth, however, they are very grateful to be able to have a normal conversation with Marie again, without having to yell directly into her ear to be heard.

Perhaps most touching of all, Marie has been delighted to, once again, hear her sister’s voice over the telephone from almost 10,000 km away.

So many things to be grateful for.  Helping Marie is certainly one of them.

“Thank you.”  Zafira’*s eyes were wet with tears.  She took each of our hands in turn.  “I wish you health, I wish you wealth, I wish you happiness.”

Good News Stories, May 2016

79-year old Zafira thought she’d never be able to hear well again.  Left out of conversations for most of the last decade, the cost of even the cheapest entry level hearing aids put the possibility of hearing well out of her reach.  She is eking out a living on a scant “fixed income”, as so many seniors sadly are.

Fortunately, we knew of a program that could help Zafira cover the cost of hearing aids.  Speaking English as a second language posed a bit of a challenge for her but, together, with the help of her friends, we navigated the ins and outs and, today, she can hear.

“You have all done so much good for me – the best that you can for me.  I wish you so many blessings.  Thank you.  Thank you.”

We couldn’t help getting a bit choked up, right along with her.  We are so lucky to be able to help bring tears of joy to people like Zafira.  Please, don’t think that you won’t hear well again simply because of money.  There are options available and we’d be happy to explore them with you.  We’d love to be a part of your Good News Story.
